Instrument information

Instruments owned by the school district and percussion students have a $75 rental fee.  Students qualifying for free/reduced lunch  have a $15 fee.  If your student wants to play a school-district owned instrument, these must be reserved in advance. Instruments are stored at Lakeway Learning Center. A parent should pay for the instrument at the school office. You should then take the receipt to LLC and show it to Pam Cowen in the Curriculum office. She will then print you a contract to sign and get the instrument for you.

Other instruments may be rented locally from Haggerty’s Musicworks in the Southview Shopping Center.  The supplies and method books may also be purchased there. If you do not wish to purchase a method book, your child can check one out from the school and must be responsible for it throughout the year. If the book is lost or damaged, they must pay for the book’s replacement. It is best if the student owns their own book as we write in them.

Method book needed: Standard of Excellence Book 1 for band students
Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for string students

SUPPLIES NEEDED

Woodwind players need: at least 3 reeds--medium soft or medium strength, cork grease, cleaning swab, name tag, pencil. It is more convenient to buy reeds by the box of 10. Plan on restocking the reed supply monthly.
Brass instruments need: a bottle of valve oil, cleaning/polishing rag (trombone students need slide oil, not slide cream), name tag, pencil.

Percussion students need: a pair of sticks size 2B or 5B and either a practice pad or percussion/bell kit, pencil. STUDENTS WILL BE CHARGED AN ANNUAL $75 FEE FOR USE OF THE SCHOOL PERCUSSION EQUIPMENT. THEY WILL BE ISSUED A SET OF BELLS TO TAKE HOME FOR PRACTICE. SOME BELL KITS MAY CONTAIN A PRACTICE PAD AS WELL. You can also rent or buy a percussion/bell kit from a music store.

String students need: a box of rosin, polishing cloth, shoulder rest or large sponge (violins & violas), a rock stop (cellos & basses), name tag, pencil. Replacement strings may be needed during the year if the string breaks.

ALL STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE THEIR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THEIR INSTRUMENT CASES AND NEED TO KEEP A PENCIL IN THEIR CASE OR FOLDER AT ALL TIMES. It is also a good idea to record the serial number of the instrument in case it is lost or stolen (for insurance purposes).
